THE first students to benefit from a pioneering scholarship scheme designed to help nurture the engineers of the future have been chosen.
A total of 40 students have been named in the first cohort of Middlesbrough College Group’s TTE Engineering Scholarship Programme.
Under the scheme, the Level 3 engineering students have each been matched with one of more than 20 top companies who have got behind the programme.
The students now get the chance to go on a work placement with their matched company and, at the end of the year, be interviewed for suitable employment or apprenticeship opportunities there.
The programme has been specifically designed to develop and attract high performing young people into engineering.
Middlesbrough College Group is already the largest engineering training provider in the country for school leavers and is hopeful that this new scheme will further enhance prospects for its students.
The chosen students also receive £50 a week – jointly funded by the College and by their matched employer – as part of their scholarship as well as accessing mentoring and other support from their matched employer.
Companies who have signed up to the scheme include major employers across a range of engineering disciplines including electrical and electronic engineering, chemical engineering, instrumentation and control engineering, manufacturing engineering and construction.
Zoe Lewis, chief executive officer at Middlesbrough College Group, said: “We have a long and proud history of working closely with local employers and training young engineers, but are always searching for ways to create more opportunities for students and companies to work together.
“The response from employers to the TTE Engineering Scholarship Programme has been amazing and the calibre of students who have been chosen to take part in this first cohort are truly outstanding.
“We can’t wait to see them learn and grow into the next generation of talented engineers and for our employer partners to reap the rewards of investing in the brightest young engineering talent.”
John McGee, managing director at Durata, which is supporting students Aidan Carrigan, Tim James and Logen Jefferson on the scholarship scheme, said: “It makes me immensely proud to be supporting such an initiative.
“There is a massive skills shortage within the engineering industry and it is up to us as employers to grab the situation by the scruff of the neck and do something about it. We want this to be a long term commitment at Durata.”
Sharon Lane, managing director at Tees Components, which is supporting students Marcus Goodison and Ben Oliver, said: “We’re thrilled to be taking part in such proactive initiative by Middlesbrough College, giving young people further opportunities to explore STEM careers.
“At Tees Components, we have a long history in investing in skills, with an award-winning apprenticeship programme and on-site training facility. This new engineering scholarship programme aligns perfectly with our work to attract, coach, and train local talent for successful engineering careers with us.
“It’s a joy to welcome Ben and Marcus into the Tees Components family and we all look forward to seeing them develop under the programme.”
Matt Telling, group director of business engagement and partnerships at Middlesbrough College Group, said: “We were hugely impressed with the students who put themselves forward for the scholarship scheme and it was a difficult task whittling them down to the final 40.
“We are so grateful to all the companies who are taking part in the programme for their tremendous support and for their dedication to developing the engineers of the future.”
