Our History
Origins
Founded on 1st April 1990 as Teesside Training Enterprise (TTE) (trading as TTE Management and Technical Training), the organisation began as a joint venture between major industrial companies ICI and British Steel, with the aim of creating high-quality, industry-ready apprentices and technicians.
From the outset, TTE’s mission was to deliver practical engineering and technical skills training to support local engineering, manufacturing, oil and gas, process and related industries across Teesside and beyond.
TTE was established as a company limited by guarantee and operated on a non-for-profit basis, with surplus income from commercial activity reinvested directly into training programmes for apprentices and young people.
Growth and Impact
In 1999-2000, TTE became fully independent, strengthening its links with local further education colleges. In 2003, it was awarded Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) status in recognition for its engineering training provision.
Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, TTE built a strong reputation for high-quality apprenticeships and technical training. It was regularly graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted and noted for strong employer engagement.
During this period, TTE delivered hands-on, industrial skills programmes across Mechanical, Electrical Maintenance, Instrumentation and Control, Chemical Process, Labs and Fabrication and Welding, supported by purpose-built training plants, simulation equipment, and bespoke programmes designed to meet evolving industry needs.
International Work
TTE’s impact extended beyond the UK, with the organisation delivering competency-based and technical training programmes internationally. This included training technicians from the Middle East and Kurdistan region, Ghana, Nigeria, Equatorial New Guinea, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Indonesia, alongside developing partnerships with international energy companies and institutions.
TTE also expanded into emerging sectors, including offshore wind and renewable energy, delivering training recognised under Global Wind Organisation (GWO) standards.
Acquisition
In 2019, TTE was acquired by Middlesbrough College, safeguarding more than 70 jobs and ensuring apprentices and trainees could continue their programmes without disruption.
This acquisition provided a stable platform for continued growth, enabling TTE to expand its training reach both in the UK and internationally while building on its established reputation for excellence.
The Modern Era
As part of the Middlesbrough College Group, TTE has combined its deep industry expertise with the college’s broader educational offer. Significant investment followed, including a £12 million state-of-the-art Training Centre at the Middlehaven campus, purpose-built to support advanced training in mechanical, manufacturing and electrical engineering, AutoCad, instrumentation, process operations, renewable energy, net zero technologies and a range of health and safety short courses.
The centre welcomed its first cohort for the 24/25 academic year, with an official opening ceremony held in March 2025, with Teesside-born broadcaster, Steph McGovern, cutting the ribbon.
Today, TTE is one of the UK’s leading providers of technical education and engineering skills development, training thousands of technicians locally and internationally.
